Delivering artwork and the many things that are happening

Yesterday we were delivering some of the artworks back from the art fair including the works of Natasha and Misha Zavialov and Kate Lockhart and Jon Lockhart. We got round to talking about deadlines and how you work on a body of work for a show. For all of the artists The Affordable Art Fair creates a pressure point when they have to have new works to show with jelly but this isn’t all they are doing and in the pressured financial times, they are all working as they always have done on multi projects.

Tonight Jon Lockhart is presenting a Networking Event as part of the arc programme at South Hill Park, Bracknell from 5.30-7.30pm tonight. The event is free and details are available on 01344 416240. The discussion is framed around a project that Jon Lockhart is involved in and visitors will have a chance to ask a wide range of questions from the conceptual framework of the project to issues relating to funding and collaboration.

There are also two events in Reading tonight, the first is at Gallery 10 which is 10 Gun Street. This is a temporary space hosting a series of exhibitions by artists, curated by themselves. The building is being loaned to the artists by the kindly landlords of The Purple Turtle and is being looked after by Zoe Funge Smith (Rogues Gallery) and Suzanne Stallard (jelly Gallery). Altered Images is a show of four artists: Robyn Appleton, Jo Derczynska, Tina Jenkins and Anna Mitchell. The show is open daily, Mon-Sat 11am-6pm; Sun 11am-4pm, and continues until 16 November at Gallery 10 in Gun Street. Tonight is a special evening where you can meet the artists from 6-9pm.

Also this evening is the next arjeea21 meeting at the Jelly from 7.30pm.

arjeea21 is a new group for contemporary artists who wish to experiment with ideas, media and innovative working practices. It provides a regular forum for informal discussion and constructive criticism of work in progress, and organises exhibitions suitable for all media, including photography, video, 3D, printmaking, performance, installation, painting, drawing, textiles and conceptual work.
arjeea21 is based in Reading, UK but welcomes national and international connections and opportunities.

The main focus of the meeting will be the upcoming exhibition, Compilation, in December at Gallery 10.

Who said there was never anything happening in Reading? It wasn’t us.

jelly bean

Just a reminder that there is no jelly bean club this Saturday (1st November) due to the school holidays but we will be back on Saturday 8th November.

Also congratulations to one of our jelly friends who visited us at The Affordable Art Fair and won a prize for her self portrait she did whilst we were there – well done!

old friends, new friends

Today was the last day at the Art Fair, we had to say goodbye for another year to our fellow gallery friends, had last moments with our artist friends who we have not seen for a while and then spent the night from 6pm packing up.

Back now and unpacked.

Re-hanging the show

Charlotte is moving on with her mural.

We also rehung the show for the first day, including the work of Kate Lockhart (nee Hince), recently graduated from The Royal College of Art.

The first night of the fair

Last night was the first night which is always like a rollercoaster. We have run around and collected work, selected the first night hang, hung the work, stored the rest, labelled, cleaned, collated and then finally we glitter ourselves up and wait for the doors to open.

The anticipation of exposing the work to the viewers can leave a tummy turning butterfly moment and to overcome this we wander around looking at other works on other stands and feel inspired and feed our creative selves with more art and sometimes real cake. Charlotte Hardy  had a TV interview

Followed by Kirsten Jones who was looking fabulous in feathers

Last night was a night of old friends, making new friends, talking and laughing

The Zavialovs

There is a book I read many years ago when I was an art student that was about artists and their relationships both as siblings, offsprings or lovers with other artists and the implications, both good and bad. I have been trying to think of the title and will shortly come back here to insert when my mind has reawakened but the more I have looked at the show in London, the more I have been thinking about that book. In the exhibition of 15 artists, 6 of these are married couples.

In the book it referred to the fact one of the pair would be inevitably overshadowed by the other but in the case of jelly these artists stand on their own.

Charlotte Hardy

Charlotte was the very first artists to exhibit in the jelly when it opened in it’s 3rd home, the purpose built space at The Oracle. She had recently graduated (2 months earlier) from Manchester with a first class degree and she had sent a wonderful submission letter so the Director went to visit her, loved her work and thought it represented jelly perfectly with it’s joyousness.

Fast forward from 1999 to today and Charlotte is now artist in residence at the Affordable Art Fair 2008. She is creating a mural during the duration and she started today in the tranquility of the stands being built.

Visiting the Kesslings

Late last night we went to collect the works from Kate Kessling and Paul Kessling

Sadly the wonderous picture of Ted was not to be taken but Kate is planning to make it in to a print in the future. We have collected some beautiful work though.

We started to exhibit Paul’s work a while ago, back in the Oracle days 1999-2004 when he had a solo show in the Upper Gallery and we have loved taking his work with us. It was Paul that told us about Kate’s work and this is her third year showing with us, with last year at the Affordable Art Fair being Kate’s year.

We were enraptured by what we found waiting for us at theirs when we arrived there, Paul’s new work is wonderful large oils on paper and we also saw the next stage of the Kessling dynasty in an amazing drawing from one of their offspring (which sadly is not with us at this Art Fair but we will be watching that space).
