Arts on a Saturday

Last week we had a wonderful evening of music, art, demos and good wine as part of our fourth Third Thursday.

The Walk (off King Street) definitely had a different feel that night with the Caversham Artists, inhabiting the space that had been provided by London and County through the Open for Art scheme.

Our new sponsor, award-winning, locally based organic wine merchant Vintage Roots, offered guests the chance to try a number of superb wines (I can only talk from experience of the one I tasted but there were mighty nods of approval) and our official photographer Salvo Toscano, recorded the night through his lens. We are very privileged to be supported by such great people, the success of the Third Thursday events is based on our partners, who we all work with and the audience so thank you all for taking part.

And if you missed the open evening, there is a chance this Saturday 26 February to meet the artists and see the works between 11am until 5pm. It will be worth it. So before we give you  snapshot of the evening, courtesy of Salvo, put the date in your diary for the next one, Thursday 17th March, we have a real treat for you then too.

Third Thursdays, a working partnership between Reading UK CIC and jelly

Lunch and Art, 20 January 2011

In a change to the usual format jelly will be hosting a lunchtime art event from 12 noon until 2pm.

The Lunch & Art event will be hosted in Upper Floor Offices at 42 Market Place where jelly artist in residence Paul Kessling has been working on a series of large abstract oil paintings which link his love of landscape and a fascination for structure – ‘ I wanted to construct my paintings, working in bands of colour, like building blocks, starting at the bottom and painting my way up – letting the colour mix and flow downwards – it’s a technique derived from watercolour painting, once you’ve started there’s no stopping or going back’.

The event will be an informal opportunity to take a break from work or play, bring along your lunch, hear Paul talk about his paintings and see a quick demonstration of how the works are made. The Third Thursday team will be on hand, serving hot drinks and some cakes and soft refreshments will be available too.

Paul Kessling has been involved with jelly since 2000. Born in 1965, Paul first studied at Goldsmiths College for a Fine Arts Foundation Course, then on to take a Degree in Sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art.  After leaving Wimbledon, Paul went to the Royal College of Art for his Masters Degree, where he studied with and subsequently worked for Sir Eduardo Paolozzi.

Paul is an accomplished artist with works in many private collections and he has carried out both private and corporate commissions in the UK and abroad.

Artist in Residence

Thank you for everyone that came last week, for the first ever Third Thursday, it was a fab evening of music, art, food, good company and we raised monies for Launchpad. Please make sure you keep Thursday December 16th in your diary for the next event which is a literary/ story event of poetry, photography, stories and histories all served up with mulled wine, mince pies and more in Town Hall Square and Blandy & Blandys. … photos to follow

We followed up the Third Thursday by installing a new shop window on Friday 19th Nov at 27/28 Market Place, the work of Susan Clark and Jo Quinn, then creating lanterns with over 150 children (yes, we were amazed too until we counted how many glowsticks we had left!) on Saturday before we led a number of them through the streets, singing and ending up in St Mary’s churchyard. It really is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

And whilst all this public activity is going on, Paul Kessling has been artist in residence up in jelly ArtPad, creating a series of new works. Here is a short time lapse film on how he creates them. Join us on Thursday 20 January (The Third Thursday) at lunchtime, bring along your lunch and enjoy a lunchtime talk and demonstration by Paul on how the works are created.

sssssshhhh, it’s a silent auction….

Tomorrow night is the launch of our new art programme, The Third Thursdays and the launch event is being kindly supported by Novotel Reading Centre.

The Third Thursday is a monthly event showcasing the creative talent of Reading and includes visual, literary, music and performing arts in non-traditional arts venues and it’s easy to remember as it’s on the Third Thursday of each month

Initially funded from a grant this programme aims to appeal to an audience that may not view the town centre offer after 5pm as being relevant to them. Third Thursdays will start off using single venues each month, but intends to broaden the scope to multiple venues in the late spring of 2011

The launch evening includes an art auction where attendees will have the opportunity to buy original works from some of Jelly’s most established artists, raising monies for charity, whilst sipping a glass of the freshly arrived Beaujolais Nouveau and enjoying some of the best French charcuterie, breads and cheeses.

Artists include Sarah Graham, now signed with major publisher Washington Green. After graduating a first in BA Hons Fine Art, Sarah started her early career as part of the team at jelly and has since become a successful sought out artist with many works in collections worldwide. We are thrilled to have this rare opportunity to sell one of her early pieces as part of the auction

The project is in partnership with Reading UK CIC:

Reading UK CIC is proud to support jelly and Third Thursdays.
“We believe that our cultural life is one of the things that makes Reading great. Our town’s energy and our commitment to the arts are just two of the reasons so many people want to live and work here.

Our town centre businesses are directly involved in Reading’s continued success, funding the Business Improvement District (BID), managed by Reading UK CIC, the economic development company for Reading. The BID funds an ambitious range of projects, all adding value to the town centre – including floral displays, Christmas lighting, extra policing and a cardboard recycling scheme. It has also initiated or partnered some surprising new events – including Eat Reading, Outside:Inside Festival and of course Open For Art, as well as introducing Rguide – the new on-line guide to evenings out in Reading.”

The launch will be raising monies for Launchpad Reading, (formerly Reading Single Homeless Project) who are a registered charity that helps some of Reading’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged people to turn around their lives and fulfil their full potential.

Launchpad Reading provide supported housing to single people who have a history of homelessness. And, as homelessness rarely comes alone, many are struggling with substance or alcohol misuse, have a history of offending or mental health issues, had a poor start in life or have been affected by a relationship breakdown.

At Launchpad Reading they give people a second chance, challenging and supporting them to make changes in their life

We will be embracing social media during the silent auction, you can follow the feed on Twitter @thejellyReading or place your bids during the event. Event runs 6-8pm
